Activities

      Radiation treatment of food and food products is world wide method for extension of shelf life, decontamination and plant protection. Like all human activities related to ionizing sources (radioisotopes, accelerators, nuclear reactors), radiation technologies are subject to ardent discussions, long term investigations and drastic control. Science 2003 a National Laboratory for Irradiated Foods Control has been functioning in Bulgaria. Our main goals are:

  • Expert evaluation when registering irradiation facilities for food processing
  • Expert evaluation when authorizing food irradiation, based on positive list approved in the country
  • Control on irradiated food on the market
